LocationLake Velence
The lakeside is among Hungary's most popular holiday resorts, offering plenty of space for water sports.
Larger towns here are Velence and Gárdony.
According to some sources, the lake once named Fertő (sink, marsh) owes its current name to Italians settling in the town now called Velence (Venice).
The lake water is rich in mineral components and is thus refreshing and regenerating for the tired body.
Characteristic islets of reed give a unique atmosphere to Lake Velence. The so-called 'swimming bogs' represent a special natural asset, just as the 420-hectare Velence Bird Reserve to the west of the lake and the neighbouring 545-hectare Dinnyés Marsh Conservation Areas, where the peace and survival of rare bird populations are ensured.
