Last month President Juncker has addressed European citizens in the yearly State of the Union speech. For those of you who missed it, here are the main points related to research and innovation in the EU.
Before the end of the year, we can expect a proposal for a new European Defence Fund, which would make available funding for research and innovation in the defence field, stimulating cooperation in this area.
The European Fund for Strategic Investments is intended to be extended beyond 2018, and the combination of this Fund with other European funding for Member States and regions will be facilitated.
A European Cloud Initiative is expected to start soon, providing €2 billion in Horizon 2020 funding for researchers, science and technology professionals to create a “virtual environment” to store, manage, analyse and re-use vast amounts of research data.
As part of the strategy for a Digital Single Market, the Commission proposed a new directive and one new regulation to modernize EU copyright rules, making them fitter to the digital environment where works are now created, produced, distributed and exploited.

European Commission to evaluate the impact of Horizon 2020
The European Commission has signed a consultancy contract for the impact assessment of H2020. "CE Delft and Ricardo will oversee the evaluation of the H2020 programme (and its predecessors) – the firms will focus primarily on the impact, effectiveness and implementation of the programme." (http://bit.ly/2cX80Qg) In July 2016 the European Research Council has already published an analysis on 199 completed ERC projects (see more here) ), but this new contract refers to the whole Horizon 2020 programme.
The impact of your research and innovation project will make somehow the world a better place.
The question for the evaluators is how? Impact plays a key role in the evaluation of Horizon 2020 proposals, so knowing how the European Commission will assess the whole impact of H2020 to society is important. Besides analysing theHorizon 2020 indicators document, we suggest to attend events that focus on the impact, exploitation, dissemination and innovation of H2020 proposals and projects. Free events are organised by the NCPs normally, such as this one on 7 October 2016 in Paris. Europa Media has developed a new one-day training course with hands-on workshops where participants can practice a specific methodology for developing successful dissemination and exploitation plans for the impact section of their project.

By definition, a meeting is "an act or process of coming together" for example "as [...] an assembly for a common purpose [...]". Meetings are omnipresent in our everyday life and a universal form of communication. Whether happening informally in our private sphere, or in a formal context of work-related setting, or anything in between, each meeting requires a certain amount of organisational effort.
This article is intended to help you quickly get an overview of what and how much organisational effort your planned meeting would require. Always reflect on the following “3 Ps” principle when organising a meeting: they help define the nature of your meeting and are important for all further planning steps.
Participation of Associated Countries in Horizon 2020: Example of Ukraine
As of September 2016, there are 16 countries associated to Horizon 2020. Being associated to Horizon 2020 means that a third country can formally participate in the programme and is expected to provide a financial contribution on the basis of an International Agreement concluded between individual non-EU countries and the European Union. The participation conditions are the same as for the EU Member States and organizations and researchers from associated countries enjoy the same rights within the Horizon 2020 framework.
