Dear Reader,

As the third year of Horizon 2020 approaches its ending, the European Commission has recently released its second Monitoring Report on the EU’s eighth Research and Innovation Framework programme. You may access the full content here, or read our analysis on our blog. Also, do not miss the latest updates to the Annotated Model Grant Agreement, including additional explanations and examples resulting from frequently asked questions.

Meanwhile, through our sister company Geonardo we proudly launched our 10th Horizon 2020 project, PLANHEAT. The goal is to develop and demonstrate a tool for local authorities to select low carbon and economically sustainable scenarios for heating and cooling that are most suitable for the local conditions. The project website will be ready soon: in the meantime, you may check the official press release to learn more.

While taking all efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, it is likely that our trainers will increase their travels to Scandinavia in the forthcoming months: we will tell you more about this in our next issue.

With our last newsletter of 2016, we would like to thank you for following us and to wish you merry and bright holidays. We are working on the training calendar for 2017: check our website regularly for updates, or drop us a line for more specific questions.

EU funding for research and innovation attracts ever more interest, report shows

Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme, is attracting more and more researchers and innovators. In 2015 there was an increase in proposals by 25% compared to 2014, especially coming from businesses, whose number of applications increased by almost 27%. Almost 50 % of participants are newcomers, many of which are small and medium-sized companies. These are some of the developments highlighted in a report on the first two years of Horizon 2020 that the Commission has published.

Two years into Horizon 2020: trends, novelties and stats
Valentina Zuri

The European Commission has recently published its second Monitoring Report on the implementation of Horizon 2020, describing trends and statistics on participation in the years 2014 and 2015 altogether. While we have already analysed the findings on the first year, this second Report sheds light over more recent figures and trends.

In 2015, 42 535 eligible proposals were submitted: a 25.5% increase from 2014. Out of these, 20 024 proposals were considered “high quality” (a 40.2% increase from 2014), however only a total of 4 565 were retained for funding, very similarly to what happened in 2014.

Therefore, in 2015 the overall success rate in terms of number of eligible proposal was 10.7%: quite an impressive  decrease from the rate of 14% of 2014.
