Last month, the European Commission has published the latest Innovation Scoreboard, an annual comparative assessment of the performance of EU countries and selected third countries in the field of research and innovation. An interesting finding from this year concerns the fact that EU performance has improved the most in the dimensions of human resources, innovation-friendly environment, own-resource investments and attractive research systems. Check the European Innovation Scoreboard Interactive Tool for detailed cross-country comparisons.
You may remember that EC President Juncker last September announced the establishment of a European Defence Fund to contribute to security and defence improvements as well as a number of EU and EU-NATO commitments. The Fund will support the whole defence production chain: research, prototype development, acquisition. Read more about eligibility and available budget in the EC Fact Sheet, and check the first three calls on the Participant Portal.
New opportunities may arise at the horizon with the new EU-China co-funding mechanism for research and innovation, which Commissioner Moedas and China’s Minister of Science and Technology, Wan Gang, recently signed. In the next Work Programmes, we can expect several calls for proposals inviting for EU-China collaborative work in the areas of Food, Agriculture and Biotechnologies, Environment and Sustainable Urbanisation, Surface Transport, Safer and Greener aviation, and Biotechnologies for Environment and Human Health.
The new calendar for our autumn and winter courses is now also available for registration and viewable in a new graphics. We hope to meet you soon in Barcelona, Vienna, Amsterdam, Berlin or Budapest!

European Funding Academy: full immersion into the Horizon 2020 world
From 13 to 16 June 2017, I had the pleasure to attend a unique event in its genre: the European Funding Academy organised yearly by Europa Media. A tradition that has become a long-awaited event and well known by researchers, consultants, public administrators and project managers. Why is it unique? It brings together under the same roof all fundamental issues you will face while dealing with EU projects from proposal development, building a consortium, drafting a budget, reporting, writing deliverables, dealing with financial issues, closing a project to potentially being audited by the European Commission.
